THE SF OASIS BRINGS THE CLASSIC GHOST MASK TO SOUTH OF MARKET WITH HEELS AND WIGS
WES CRAVEN WOULD BE IMPRESSED. THIS VERSION OF 'SQREAM' IS THE BEST LIVE BLOOD BATH FOR THE HALLOWEEN SEASON
Review by Vince Mediaa
Move over Rocky - this Halloween there's a new bitch in town. The award winning SF Oasis team who brought you the Rocky Horror Experience last year brings us a new immersive show for Halloween 2022. Producer D'Arcy Drollinger and team brings the bloody gay GHOST MASK to Oasis Live! Through Nov 6th. Don’t answer that phone! SQREAM is the best bet this Halloween season.
The sellout crowds outside the Oasis enter the SQREAM home through the bar in shifts to hear the famous 90’s phone ring as Courteney and Drew are reminded to return their Blockbuster VHS horror films. Scream is an American horror slasher franchise that includes five films, a television series, merchandise, and games. The series has grossed over $740 million in worldwide box-office receipts. The film series is created by Kevin Williamson. This premiere musical version of SQREAM was written by Michael Phillis, produced and featuring D'Arcy Drollinger. Directed by Jason Hoover and Eliza Leoni with clever 90’s Choreography by Leslie Waggoner and Music by Steve Bolinger and his live band.
The entire Oasis Club is transformed in the SQREAM home to immerse and welcome visitors and victims to the SQREAM house. The cast of 10 runs amok through the audience chased by the knife Ghost Mask. The club is well designed by the creative team of Daniel Harvey, Evian, Nic Candito and Jerald Girard. The front bar is the living room featuring DREW BURIEDMORE and COURTENEY LOVE COX played by the terrific hysterical D'Arcy Drollinger. Once the blood shed is splattered - the story moves to the main room.
The cast features some of the best Oasis Drag Queens and Kings performers including the flawless Snaxx as NEVE SIDNEY CAMPBELL PRESCOTT, who is featured in a number of the hit 90’s song including “Stupid Girl”. Snaxx stops the show as she owns the Oasis ramp.
The hot toppless Jordon Bridges plays BILLY THE BOYFRIEND and is sassy in his many solo’s including “Wonderwall” and while he is in his tighty whities. Bridges has a superb voice alongside Coco Merrell who plays RANDALL, JAMIE and KENNEDY.
Bay Area favorite Manual Canel is hysterical as DEPUTY DAVEY COX ARQUETTE running amok arresting every cast member including members of the audience. Alongside the Reporter played by D’Arcy as she presents a 90’ classic Third Eye blind number. The classic 90’s hits steal the show as this super queer whodunnit musical spans the entire franchise of this horror classic and other films. Who survives and who is the killer behind the gay Ghost face mask.
The power house ensemble includes Cheetah Biscotti, Diogo Zavadzki, Kitty Litter, and Beff Leppard all dressed to kill or be killed by costume designer Daniel Harvey. The cast has many campy over the top numbers including “I’ll Die for You” and “I’m Just A Girl” choreographed by the gifted Leslie Waggoner.
This is a great night of live singing, dancing, blood-drenched comedy that's as campy, sexy, and gory as your millennial adolescence. This is the soundtrack for classic horror humor as the tech crew runs like splashing popcorn by sound designer Jerald Girard. The slashes and punches fill out the lighting by Nic Candito. But the real stars are the two stage managers Lori Fowler and Kyler Stanion who keep the cast and huge scope with a live band running this blood gushing spoof.
Directors Jason Hoover and Eliza Leoni keep the horror and camp at 100%. Writer Micheal Phillis fills the night with puns and lines from other iconic horror films “We are all gonna die!”, “the killer is here in the house performing a musical number”. Hoover keeps the memorable bloody garage door scene an important part of the two act SQREAM. Tatum is crushed by the door as gay Ghost Mask looks on. It's great bloody sexy fun.
The show ends with a mix of killers in gay Ghost Masks, so I suggest you bring your own Ghost Mask and do your best to see this show since tickets may be gone as the second weekend opens. D’ Arcy Drollingers team has out done themselves. This is not to be missed and do not answer that phone!
